Craftworker Training & Certification
Apprenticeships
Overview | Youth Apprentice Program | Career
Paths
Carolinas AGC offers an extensive Apprenticeship Program, registered through the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training or the North Carolina Department of Labor.
An Apprentice is one who is learning by practical experience under skilled workers. Most
apprenticeship programs run from 3-4 years during which the
individual will work a full regular hour week with on-the-job-training as well as complete 144 classroom hours of instruction each year.
Apprentices are evaluated for a predetermined wage increase every six months. When the apprentice successfully completes all of the required work-based learning and related classroom instruction, certification of occupational and academic mastery is awarded.
Graduates will receive a "skilled" pay rate, and may receive a nationally recognized diploma from Carolinas AGC, the US Department of Labor, NC Department of Labor, and/or the National Center for Construction Education and Research.
Benefits to the apprentice's employer

Advanced Credit - Apprenticeship programs can be shortened if individuals can verify good previous on-the-job work experience or classroom instruction, which relates to a particular trade (shop courses, etc.). This will be guaranteed in a written agreement.
Youth Apprenticeship Program
This program especially for 16 and 17-year-old high school juniors and seniors
is an industry-driven education and career training program that is based on recognized industry standards.
It provides each student an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on technical training,
and prepares high school students to be high performance workers and at the same time continue their education in a community college/adult apprenticeship, college, or university program.
The program provides competitive pay scales with advancement opportunity while the student learns.
A partnership among business/industry, education, government,
parents, and youth apprentices is a means by which employers address current and projected employment needs through work-based and school-based learning.
How it works - Apprentices work on a part-time basis during
the school year and full-time in the summer. After graduating from high school, the youth apprentice moves into an adult apprentice program and continues his/her education. The employer may offer permanent employment and the apprentice has the option of entering the workforce and/or
continuing his/her education
